The South Coast Health Equity Coalition (SCHEC) is a community-led organization working alongside people across Coos and Curry Counties to create communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Founded in 2022, SCHEC was born from years of listening, organizing, and collaboration. Community members, healthcare leaders, nonprofits, Tribal partners, educators, and local governments came together with a shared understanding: lasting change happens when the people most impacted by inequities are trusted to lead.

Our work is rooted in an aspiring anti-racist practice and the belief that health is shaped by much more than access to medical care. Housing, food, transportation, education, belonging, cultural connection, and economic opportunity all play a role in our collective well-being. We also recognize that many of the barriers our communities face today are the result of systems that were not designed to serve everyone equitably. Together, we are working to change those systems while building new pathways rooted in dignity, collaboration, and community leadership.

Every program we offer begins by listening. Through community conversations, partnerships, and lived experience, we co-create solutions that reflect the strengths, cultures, and priorities of the people who call Oregon's South Coast home.

Today, SCHEC partners with healthcare organizations, schools, Tribal Nations, community-based organizations, government agencies, and grassroots leaders to strengthen health and well-being across the region. Our work includes youth leadership development, culturally responsive community gatherings, reproductive justice, food justice, healthcare navigation, rapid response efforts, advocacy, policy and systems change, and community education.

We believe belonging is a protective factor for health. When people feel connected, valued, and empowered, communities become stronger.
