The South Coast Health Equity Coalition (SCHEC) is the backbone of Juneteenth celebrations across Coos and Curry counties. As a community-rooted, BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+–led coalition, we champion racial justice, health equity, and collective liberation on the Oregon Coast.

Our Role:

  • Lead Organizer & Convener
We bring together residents, nonprofits, educational institutions, and cultural agencies—including Black Market Gourmet, Southwestern Oregon Community College, Coos History Museum, and the Oregon Remembrance Project—to design inclusive, multi-site Juneteenth events.

  • Facilitator of Reflection & Learning
From film screenings like Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom, to the Juneteenth Flag Raising at SWOCC, and community conversations in parks, we center history, resilience, and truth in every gathering.

  • Connector to Culture & Justice
SCHEC brings the soul of Gospel, storytelling, and live performance into Juneteenth through events like our closing Parking Lot Party. This celebration honors Black creativity, heritage, and collective healing.

Soul Food Sunday: A Catalyst for Liberation

Soul Food Sunday is more than a tradition—it’s a guiding practice for SCHEC’s Juneteenth efforts. These monthly gatherings, co-created by Black community members, provide essential spaces to:

  • Center Black voices and lived experience

  • Plan meaningful events rooted in community need

  • Cultivate cultural nourishment, mutual care, and empowerment

It’s from these fellowship tables that the themes, menus, music, and messages of our Juneteenth celebrations emerge—ensuring that every event is not only joyful, but also healing, affirming, and community-driven.

We Invite You to Join Us
